Comment on The 2000s: Decade in Review by It's a Grown-Up World

"illegally detained and tortured a number of people in Guantanamo Bay" Besides the fact that it wasn't remotely illegal, hardly qualifies as torture, and didn't happen at Gitmo, did you ever wonder if there is a side that "deserves" to win? It has become very clear to me that progressives like you have a blind faith in random moral rules and never stop to consider what might be necessary for better people to do to worse people in order to preserve their way of life (which is a clearer way to think about justice than human-rights hand-wringing). And seriously, you think we just detained "people"? Try terrorists. Another example of political correctness keeping people from understanding the truth.

Comment on 8:27 Procrastination: CMC myth dispelled! by Bullsh!t

So either every student magically sorts their stuff or story house lumps everything in the trash? I’d expect North Korea to stop their nuclear program before I’d expect all CMCers to sort their recycling.Having had 8:10 classes every year every monday I see the housekeeping crew throw plastic bags full of glass and aluminium cans down from second floor northquad, only to break on impact with the ground. Story house doesn’t care about recycling, students don’t care about recycling. By taking one side you cheapen your argument. Real conservationists are AGAINST recycling. They are for reuseability. The biggest donors to earth day and recycling lobbies are megaconglomerates like coca cola as they profit off of recycling and not reuseability. People feel good when they recycle and don’t enact real change. Recycling is the antichrist of the green movement. Heck, more people recycle in America than vote. Real change occurs from reusing not recycling. Americans should feel bad not good about wasting resources. As an aside, the whole utility of recycling argument is still up in the air. More trees are in the US today than 100 years ago due to the lumber industry/capitalism. Plastic at least used to cost more to recycle than to make new. Same with paper. I think those numbers have come down but this recycling hysteria is insane. Glass and aluminum and other metals generally are worth recycling. This is why we have CRV and monetary incentives to recycle. The other recyclables are up to debate on the efficacy. See Penn and Teller’s take on recycling here until google video takes it down. http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...

Comment on And the winner is…TAP WATER! by Madison Shimoda

I think many of you are missing the point: water connoisseurs like myself drink bottled water for the taste of water. We would not spend money on untasty, tap-water tasting water like Poland Springs or Dasani, but we don’t mind paying for water that tastes good. For example, for those who prefer harder tasting water– that’s water with more Mg for ordinary folks– you would go for Evian or the even harder Contrex. If you prefer a milder but not too soft water, you may go for Le Bleu. If you like carbonated water, you might like Perrier (I prefer San Pellegrino.) My personal preference of water is Fiji or Panna. Choosing to drink bottled water is very much like choosing to drink bottled apple juice. Sure you can help the environment buy buying apples and making your own juice but some times the bottled martinelli stuff tastes better. Also, Nalgene bottles changes the taste of water.

Comment on And the winner is…TAP WATER! by Charlie Sprague

Charles- A) the link you provided does not link to those stats, its just an interview entitled “Bottled Water: The New Slippery Slope” B) I’m not opposed to privatized water in principle (if the transition costs are not too high and the private water companies can actually manage water resources more efficiently). Those are two big ifs in my opinion and the terribly conducted privatization fiascos we seen in the US in recent years makes me worry that water privatization will end up being in the public interest (most likely state and municipal govs strapped for cash during this recession will sell water supplies at way under their true). Consider what happened with California Energy Deregulation and Enron, as well as the many, many cases of botched privatization plans involving public roads. Also, many water privatization schemes in the developing world have proven to be huge disasters. However, I have no theoretical objection to privatizing water, I just think prudence dictates we avoid privatizing. C) Private tap water is defensible, but bottled water isn’t. The distinction is quite important because you can have the market accountability you want with private water companies without resorting to bottled water. Bottled water has a terrible environmental impact, it costs more than tap water, and it is no more safe/pure/clean than good tap water, especially if the tap water is filtered.
